It’s a little early for the autumn leaves, but first we went from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge, Myojin Pond, and the shrine.

Kamikochi has been designated as a special natural monument.

This is because of its unparalleled natural scenery of alpine plants, aquatic animals, and wetland plants, as well as its academic value.

Taisho ike Pond.

Mt. Yake dake looked good.

Unfortunately, there were clouds above us and we couldn’t see the top of the mountain.

The pond was created when the Azusa River was dammed up by the eruption of Yakidake in 1915. The pond is filled with deep emerald-colored water and has a mysterious atmosphere with withered trees.

Water is clean.

Is it rockfish?

This is Tashiro Pond.

Tashiro Pond is a shallow pond that spreads out over an open marshland in the midst of a virgin forest. Tashiro Pond is a shallow pond formed by sediment from the Hachiemon stream and other sources. There are several islands in the pond, and the scenery is as serene as a rice paddy field. The fresh green leaves in May, the yellow leaves in October, and the misty ice in late autumn are also recommended sights.
In the Tashiro Marshland covered with sagisuge, the reflection of the Hotaka mountain range in the clear water is exquisitely accented by the orange of the Renge-tsutsuji azaleas that bloom during the fresh green season.

The Azusa River Course was closed and we went to the forest course.

We arrived at Tashiro Bridge. From here you can get to the Nishi Hotaka trail.

The Kamikochi Line is a cute two-car train that takes a leisurely ride through the countryside as it passes through the town of Matsumoto. If the weather is clear, you can enjoy the view of the mountains, and it is interesting to see tourists and local students riding together.

There are also direct buses from the Matsumoto Bus Terminal (about a 5-minute walk from the station) to Kamikochi (advance reservations required), although only two buses a day are available. If you can time it right, it is a convenient way to get to Kamikochi without having to change trains.

Niijima Station
The bus stop is right in front of you as you exit the ticket gate. It will take more than an hour to get to the bus stop, so you will want to use the restroom. Buses bound for Norikura-Kogen sometimes depart at the same time, so be careful not to get on the wrong bus if there are two buses.

Niijima- Kamikochi
The bus runs along the valley of Azusa River. A short distance after departure, you will cross a bridge, and the river is first on the left. After passing the Inakaku Dam, the view of the dammed lake will be on the right. After passing Nagawa Wataru, the lake will be on the left again, but it will be difficult to see due to many tunnels. The tunnel and the canyon scenery alternates with the Sawando hot spring area on the way.

After passing through the last tunnel, you will finally reach Kamikochi. Taisho Pond comes into view on the left. It is like a “welcome to Kamikochi. The rest of the way is through the forest scenery, and we arrive at the bus terminal.

Kamikochi Bus Terminal
There is a tourist center, information center, tipping toilets, stores, and luggage storage.

<check!> The bus for the return trip is by reservation only, specifying the flight in advance. You can make a reservation online or at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal counter and specify the bus you want to take at the same time you buy your ticket. Reservations and ticket purchases can be made from one month in advance until 15 minutes before departure from the bus terminal. If you miss the bus, you can make a change at the bus terminal counter only on the day of purchase (100 yen fee).

Only the flight is designated, and seats are unreserved. You will be seated in the seat of your choice on a first-come, first-served basis.
