About Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens
This is one of Nagoya’s top autumn foliage spots that you can easily reach by public transport, and it attracts many visitors. The park is home to about 450 animal species and 7,000 plant species. The botanical garden alone has more than 500 trees that change color in autumn, such as maples and ginkgo.
The park offers a variety of scenery, including a Japanese garden and gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Thanks to the natural hilly terrain, a walk here feels as if you were in the mountains. Part of the botanical garden stays open until 20:30 during the autumn illumination period.
Highlights
The path from Yaryuen Garden to the Japanese Garden is especially recommended. About 200 maple trees of 60 different varieties turn brilliant red and orange, an unforgettable sight.

Don’t miss the view of the gassho-zukuri houses across Okuike Pond, the “upside-down maples” reflected in Okuike Pond and the Japanese garden pond, and the “maple tunnel” along Yaryuen Garden.
