Chiiwa Gorge, Aichi (Part 1): Stalactite Cave and the Tsutenmon Stone Arch

Chiiwa Gorge (Chiiwakyo), Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture

About Chiiwa Gorge

Lime dissolved from the volcanic tuff rock has formed breast-shaped stalactites on the ceiling of a cave here, which gives Chiiwa (“breast rock”) its name. Many statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, are enshrined inside the cave. Near the summit stands Tsutenmon, a natural stone arch whose size is truly overwhelming. The combination of the beautiful valley and strangely shaped rocks makes a deep impression on visitors.

Ayu sweetfish in the clear stream!

Climbing to Tsutenmon

From here, the trail becomes steep.

This is the start of the steepest section.

It is almost vertical, with chains and ladders to help you climb.

We even spotted a snake!

The view from above:

At the top, there is a spectacular view through the gap between the rocks.

Then we headed back down to the entrance.
