Tsukechikyo is a beautiful gorge in Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture. It has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 best forests for forest bathing, one of Gifu’s 50 best waters, and one of the 33 best autumn foliage spots in the Hida and Mino regions.

Fudo Park and the Waterfalls
At the entrance to Fudo Park there is a guide map and a spring where you can taste the clear local water. A walking trail follows the stream deep into the forest, past a series of waterfalls. Water pours down the dark granite cliffs into pools of transparent emerald-green water. Two of the best-known falls are Kannon Falls and Fudo Falls.

Suspension Bridges and Forest Trail
The trail crosses the gorge on several narrow suspension bridges. A sign asks visitors not to shake the bridge and to cross with no more than three people at a time. From the bridges you can look straight down at the rushing water and rocks.

The Tsukechi River in Autumn
Further downstream the valley opens up. The river is so clear that you can see every stone on the bottom, and in autumn the hills along the banks turn red, orange and yellow.

On the way back, we stopped at a viewpoint above an emerald-green dam lake crossed by a red arch bridge, with distant mountains on the horizon.
