Matsumoto – Niijima
The Kamikochi Line is a cute two-car train that takes a leisurely ride through the countryside as it passes through the town of Matsumoto. If the weather is clear, you can enjoy the view of the mountains, and it is interesting to see tourists and local students riding together.
There are also direct buses from the Matsumoto Bus Terminal (about a 5-minute walk from the station) to Kamikochi (advance reservations required), although only two buses a day are available. If you can time it right, it is a convenient way to get to Kamikochi without having to change trains.
Niijima Station
The bus stop is right in front of you as you exit the ticket gate. It will take more than an hour to get to the bus stop, so you will want to use the restroom. Buses bound for Norikura-Kogen sometimes depart at the same time, so be careful not to get on the wrong bus if there are two buses.
Niijima- Kamikochi
The bus runs along the valley of Azusa River. A short distance after departure, you will cross a bridge, and the river is first on the left. After passing the Inakaku Dam, the view of the dammed lake will be on the right. After passing Nagawa Wataru, the lake will be on the left again, but it will be difficult to see due to many tunnels. The tunnel and the canyon scenery alternates with the Sawando hot spring area on the way.
After passing through the last tunnel, you will finally reach Kamikochi. Taisho Pond comes into view on the left. It is like a “welcome to Kamikochi. The rest of the way is through the forest scenery, and we arrive at the bus terminal.
